This vagabund is lost in space, will be back as soon as the route of return has been established.

Mitt cybernetiska jag tar en paus. Återkommer genast tillfället tillåter.

Que dice Arnold?

* I'll be back!*

riven ost

Green days

Got a message from my favourite Christmas and birthday present toy store. They are celebrating green days. 15% off on all toys up until Earth Hour.

I am confused. How can shopping more mean that you are greener? Isn't Earth Hour all about becoming aware of our consumption and bad habits of spending on things we really do not need. At least in our house we really do not need any more toys. Sending out these kind of temptations is just cruel, both to my wallet and mother nature.

Luckily there are no birthdays at sight (except for my own, in less than a week!) so I can completely ignore this marketing trick. Did not even enter the store's Internet site. Good mama, that's the way!

Sol y calor!

No sé.

Trajes.

I'm trying to buy tickets to the Åland Islands. The summer paradise and winter ghost town. We are those strange tourists that also go there in winter time. There are two ways of going there: by air or by sea. A is getting enthusiastic as she sees the big boat on the internet site. "Mom, that's the boat I want to take." Hold your horses, little girl. There are no ferries on the requested date. I turn to the page of airplanes instead. Girl not as excited anymore. Gone are the days when she longed for a ride up in the air, and when she jumped up and down on the seat announcing to all the other (5) passangers on the Åland-plane: "Look, we are flyyyyying!". That's was about a year ago. We had not been up in the air for a long time, due to pregnancy and that flying suddenly became expensive as girl turned two. Now  having the small plane and the big plane in fresh memory - flying undoubtedly is not as exiting anymore.
So I make a half-way deal with the daugther. We'll fly there and take the big boat back. Then hopefully everyone will be happy. Now, only if I could remember all the different passwords for the booking...

Sueldo? No, mi empleador no me paga sueldo.

I turn off the lights

As the nuclear plant mess in Fukushima turns yet more alarming I myself turn off the tv and the lights in our house. I remember how my dad used to get mad at us, back in the 90s. He ran hecticly around our home switching off all lights in rooms with no one in them. His retorical question to us teenagers was; Do you want a 5th nuclear power plant? As if we would have understood the meaning of it at that point . Lazy teenagers watching soap operas and MTV on the telly. Ironically enough, my husbands first job on Finnish soil was located at Olkiluoto power plant...helping to BUILD the 5th plant...my dad even encouraged him to accept the job. Talk about contradictions. Today I hear my dad's voice in my head again and I turn off the lights, maybe hoping to save us from a 6th...if only wind and sun could be the solution.

Nostalgic gluttony - 10 years of Chile on my mind!

First time I stepped on Chilean soil was in June 2001. Unfortunately I did not own a digital camera back then so I will not be presenting any before and after pics here. But for those of you that share some precious memories with me from those times; this is dedicated to you!

Going up...
...to the top....
...to check out the smog!
Telefonica is still standing. Its just not called Telefonica anymore. Its Movistar. Same'ol, same'ol. Service unheard of and bills that come with extra unwanted charges. Same sh*t, different name.

Copa Menta. My Sunday lunch back in 2001. San Sebastian is called Fragola these days. But still in the same place. Powerhouse is something like Energy Gym...

Go figure! Here the essential question of "to be or not to be" becomes very accurate. The destiny of the girl in this playground  was decided in the white building with red balconies - almost 10 years ago!

Old meets new. Doll house versus Goliat tower... Largest shopping center in South America, highest tower and blablabla...too bad for the small shops down the street in Providencia...their days are counted.

Our first common home on the other side of the road from the dollhouse-Goliat-tower. Palm tree still standing. And somebody living in our depto on the second floor. They even bothered to place flowers in the sunheated windows. But I gather that they do not see the mountains anymore, nor the SAS Radisson (nowadays BLU) hotel.

A wall. And behind this wall, the former dictator, Agusto Pinochet, met his final destiny in December 2008.

Avenida Vitacura. The new MEGA-project on the left, the military hospital (Pinochet's death bed) on the right. And just a few steps away from our lovely home.

Who recognizes this? Ok, the tower is kind of spoiling the spirit... but yes, Lousiana still up and running on Suecia. And as I caught a taxi in this picture, I can also tell you all that the taxis nowadays all come with AC and decent seats. Yes, upgrading, big time.

Who misses this? El comercio ambulante! Quite practical. Sells what ever there is a demand for. When raining they sell umbrellas, when sun is shining sun glasses. And not to be forgotten the piracy: dvds, cds. Check out the cloth...its practical because if a policeman happens to come too close, these people just pack and leave. In a matter of seconds. So if Avenida Providencia is free from "comerciantes", you'll know there is a "Carabinero" closeby.

Famous Transantiago bus stop. Looks empty to me....
And the new color of the transsantiago buses. No more yellow.
What's wrong here? Can you see it???
The church tower that fell down with the earthquake last year. Not replaced yet.
Bar Torres in the center. What a lovely place. And they even have "old style" tango concerts in the evening. Can someone tell me why I never visited this place, while living in the city? Did not even know about it. Must have been the horror stories about down town in night time that kept me away. Should have entered Chile through Barrio Brasil instead of Las Condes...More adventures (and less Copa Menta..)
The floor of the tango bar. Charming, even that!

Parque Araucano and the new office buildings on the other side (Parque Arauco behind my back). Impressive, modern, huge. And below the Park they are currently building a water entertainment park. Talk about investments!...but this is also the municipality of Las Condes. They can afford builiding underground. Talking about tunnels, they are still debating the last strip of the concessioned highway* Vespucio in Las Condes, La Reina - neighbours want tunnel, probably too expensive for the private investors. But hey, were the neighbours in all the other xx municipalities heard when they built a gigantic highway right thorugh their neighbourhoods? Doubt it.

*Footnote: the private highways inside Santigao have made wonders to reduce traveling time! The tunnel next to the river is excellent for those who are ready to pay and wants to move east-west-east rapidly. Vespucio Norte and Sur are all highways now, payable with automatic TAG-system. And the Autopista Central gets you South-North-South on the Panamericana without even noticing that you passed a metropolis with a population of 7 million. What you can do with private economic incentives. I have to confess, I am impressed.

Back to the roots on Av. Matucana. Why not spend some capital on restoring these lovely buildings? Ah, right...we are in Chile...let me guess: private economic incetives missing? What about cultural heritage?

Then, a short commercial dedicated to hubby at the very end!

Writings on the wall of the absolute center of the Chilean wine production. Fair trade?
(English: Alcohol, a tool of control, wake up and fight)

This is find so true and so descriptive of both Chile and Finland. Hard working, ambitious countries. Finland got its upswing as a developcountry some 30 years back. Chile is better off everyday. (ok you can discuss the distribution of the Chilean wealth, but the direction is clearly upwards).

There used to be a Sushi bar here. Only toilets standing. Earthquake 2010 erased the Sushi bar, and the church on the other side of the street.

Chilean old train. Yes, they used to have train connection - to the beach! That was before someone  decided to skip trains and invest in motorways. Nice to travel 40000 kms north to south on a double laned, mostly empty, motorway. Mostly boring, though. I myself would have preferred a highspeed train. Especially to the beach...Especially as I lived almost 4 years in this country, without a car. Bummer.

Old house, damaged in earthquake a year ago. There is a big debate going on about reconstruction and the amount of immediate rescue efforts right after the quake. I think the posting next to the door refers to that. Kind of absurd. They just found a truck load of food dumped in the river banks. The food had been sent to the victims of the quake last year. It seem like the truck driver thought the food would serve better as soil next to the river. Maybe he was in a hurry and needed to return home. Football calling? Just wonder what he was thinking while dumping the food...

The Santa Cruz museum. More than a museum. Impressive stuff inside. But so is it run by one of the most wanted Chilean business men. He must have a lot of money to have such a collection to donate to a museum. I mean, A LOT. And maybe some influence as well. Just a tiny bit. What was his business now again; ah dealing with weapons. That's it. A little gun shop, that's his original business. Now his into museums and wines as well. Diversification, that's what its called.

The Ocean were the tsunami of 2010 swept in. A boat that made it true the battle. And a construction site. There is hope... The Japanese tsunami waves actually hit these grounds one year later. I am not clear about the damages. We had already left at that point.

So I thought we were safe. There are evacuation signs everywhere on the beach in Chile. Trying to reassure the inhabitants and visitors that everything is ok. But everything is NOT ok. With the speed and force that the Japanese tsunami swept in on land in Japan there was no way for the people to escape, even if they got the warning and were awake when the quake hit. The Pacific Ocean is not to be trusted. Neither are such signs as these. But the shoreline of this ocean is just so beautiful....and what is the likelihood of a gigant wave striking right when I am visiting the place.... We will still return...

Wines, wines and some more wines. Almost going to the local Alko store in Finland. Almost. But in alko they do not open the bottle for you to have a taste... a pitty, what a feast it could be.

The lake that I did not know that existed or better said; that the owners of the property around it did not want me to know it existed. Beautiful place but very remote, private, and quite "cuica" to say the least! (Cuica=chilean word for upper class style)
Still standing. Please someone, UNESCO, or even the gun shop man; put some dough into this place. Such a beautiful old colonial village and it is in ruins. There will not be much left if another big quake hits the place....

Back to reality...

After a couple of days of reconquisting the home, the playgrounds and supermarkets we are now ready to face the reality once again. This patiperra is going back into her motherhood-bubble, where the day is determined in laps of 2-3 hours, and where the most interesting conversation of the day can be what diseases are going around in the neighbourhood.

It is strange to be back. In the morning as I prepare the porridge the first I do is to look for the matches. HELLO! We do not have gas heated stow, its electric!!! In the night I wake up, look at the furniture in the bedroom thinking to myself "strange, this hotel has a piece of furniture exactly like the one at home - hey wait a minute, where am I?!?", only realizing that I AM at home when hubby wakes up to my mumbles and reminds me that we already got back home, three days ago...

Today we went to a winter happening in one of the local parks. The playground was crammed with families. The happening of the month... Dog-sleds, ice queen, polar bear, warm sausages, Snowman competition, fire truck. The complete set of exiting experience for kids. My kids, back in the snow, happy as ever. Well, A was happy, especially meeting up with a good friend from daycare. G...hmmm... I think he preferred the dusty Chilean playground. He can hardly stand on the icy snow and he does not understand the purpose of gloves. One place that he likes, though, is the sled. He loves it. And that is the only positive part about the snowy sidewalks. The kids can still be transported with the help of the plastic sled. Hooray, what an achievement (read irony; I reeeeaaalllly miss my bike and the Kidcar connected to it).

After four months of dense snow, the winter still continues here in Helsinki. People tell me that we are far better off now than a few weeks ago. In my head I hear myself saying: "Oh really, what is this white stuff on the ground?!? Styrox?!?!" During most of the time we've been away the mercury has shown -20 to - 30 degrees celsius. And apparently we have a lot less snow now than some weeks ago. I can understand their point and I am relieved that we could escape five weeks of this agony. I usually like the snow, but in moderate amounts and reasonable time...the record of century and 4 months of it is just too much. Hence, its hard to accept the fact: this snow is not disappering in a day or two. We will still see snow on our yard for at least another month...maybe two more months. And I do not know how my son will entertain himself in the playground during that time. But it is true, the air that I breeth has a slight touch of spring in it, there is hope that the summer will return also this year. I'll just continue inside my mommy-bubble until then!

Tsunami in the Pacific

Japan has had an earthquake, same magnitude as that of Chile last year. Massive tsunami. I saw the movie "Hereafter" on the plane home. The tsunami scene in the beginning of the movie gave me nightmares. My thoughts go to all the Japanese that have now experienced that in real life. At the same time I am relieved that this family is back home on steady grounds.  During all the trip the thought of an earthquake was constantly present in my mind. At home, in the metro, at the shoppingcenter, at the beach, at the lake, at the metro. I was constantly in search of escape routes and emergency plans in case a major earthquake would hit. How to deal with the kids, where to run. Such natural catastrophes do not happen here at the Baltic Sea. The closest to such experience that we come was last summers thunderstorms. Nowhere near.

I hope the Japanese tsunami won't make any more damages in the Pacific than what it already did in Japan this morning.

What a shock - complete memory loss in 5 weeks!

...after 5 weeks outside of the country I am struck by how quickly one forgets.

First, entering the airport of Helsinki I am completely in shock to see people in winterclothes and especially wearing winter boots. I had forgot those even exist.

Secondly, I am completely overwhelmed of the silence at the luggage hall. Helsinki international airport at 7 p.m. and you can hear a needle drop to the floor. You know you are in Finland!

The snow. They say its been melting. Really? I still see just as much snow on the side of the road as when we left. The sidewalks in our neighbourhood are not snowfree. Or maybe snowfree, but not icefree. The escaping the winter strategy did not exactly work. Let's see tomorrow how well we are off with the melting stage.

At home I am struck by how everything seems so nice and tidy. Did we really manage to leave the home in this state of excellence? Or was it our friendly neighboor that did all this (apart from getting us some food in the fridge... thank you neighbour!!).It does not take long to put it in the normal state of siege, though. 5 minutes and its all so familiar messy again!

Then I start throwing away garbage... wait a minute- we used to recycle...and I even used to sort burnable plastics from the rest. My goodness, I can't remember where to throw what. Talk about vacation!

Let's see what G says about my ecological project tomorrow as he gets a cloth diaper on his bum... No more Huggies, back to BumGenius reality for him!

Top Ten - things I will miss

1. The water - always manage to forget how beautiful the water makes my hair.
2. The malls - what a shopping exprience! Never ever experienced anything like it. Lucky fo my wallet (and my green values), the best malls in the world are located on the other side of the globe.
3. March summer weather - tell me again why I had to suffer with 33 degrees in February when we on the day of departure have the perfect weather of 27 degrees? March is simply the best in Stgo!
4. Metro of Stgo - Que maravilla! The metro in Helsinki has no added value - one line, one kilometer under the ground. It takes longer to make it down to the train than to walk to the destination. In Stgo you escape all the traffic jam above ground and travel happily extensively in this 7 million metrolpolis. I say as my daughter: bye bye metro, hasta la vista baby!
5. The wine - goes without saying, right?
6. Los tatas - A mother-in-law that learns to cook porridge and father-in-law that is the absolute idol of my little-one. I say as my son: "Tata, Tata, Tata"...
7.  Los amigos - my friends, always happy and "buena honda", we will meet again!
8. The restaurants - what a culinary experience!
9. Las telenovelas - my mother-in-law got us (note "us", hubby even more than me) hooked on two soap operas. There is nothing like the TVN crew of soap actors (Pelluco from Amores de Mercado still on the telly here!)
10. La Biblioteca de Santiago - that collection of children´s books in Spanish, and all the unexplored books in the section of History of Chile.... I will just have to return for a day on my own in that beautiful airconditioned builiding on the street of Matucana....

Five years ago, I could have made a similar list (or even longer)  of things I will not miss... Now I have experienced a second honeymoon in this marvellous country. I cannot come to think of even one thing I will not miss. But so am I also once again the "Gringa" just passing by for a while, without having to deal with Isapres, AFP:s, banks, Notarias... Viva Chile lindo!

SOVMORGON!

Klockan visar 10:53.

Traveling with kids - great fun!

We have done a true Odyssé of touristing this week, the kids and I. I never thought it would be possible to explore so much in Santiago alone with a three and one year old. But it was. The key to success: respect the children, clinging on to some daily routines, and always planning ahead with nutrition, having it ready when it time to eat... And off course, selecting the tourist sights based on age of the tourists.

We have seen the interactive science center MIM, where the kids got to play piano by jumping from one key to the other. At MIM they also caught gigant soap bubbles - loads of fun until G decided to try to swim in the bubblewater. We have been to three malls and tried all their coin driven cars and helicopters, without any coins. I even managed to do some bargain shopping in between the rides! We tried getting into the Aquarium without success, the place had shut down two days earlier and we were told that the fish were swimming towards the Pacific. We visited the child-friendliest library ever, Biblioteca de Santiago, where the kids played for hours and also got me to read a couple of tales in Spanish for them. We visited several parks, some bigger and some smaller, some hotter and some cooler. The kids have been enjoying all these places and all these things that we have been doing for the past few days. But actually, I think there was something they even enjoyed more than any of the above adventures and that was the journey.

You should have seen A´s face in the local bus when she got to listen to a rapper on the front row and later pass him a coin for his great performance. The five minute performance was almost as good as the preschool popular band Arne Alligator back home. "Mom, he said muchas gracias" she whispered to me after he had passed by with his hat. The Metro has been another exciting place. We have discovered museums within the metro stations and inspiring paintings on the walls. Things that I would never ever pay attention to if I passed through the stations in a hurry on my own. We have seen funny commercials on the side of the streets; a girl being splashed with orange soda and all the filosphical questions of why and how sticky she must have been after the shower... The Iron Maiden monster and the red paint dripping on the floor....the Michelin-man and the local soda figure Bilz.

The younger of the two has been busy charming every woman (and man) that happens to look at him. With his international language he can small talk for hours with strangers. Bilibilibli, pele, voffvoff, bilililibili. Smile. Audience melting. The other day he taught a gentleman on the metro how to do "high five". He bonded so well with the gentleman that he started crying once his new friend got off the train.

Every day we have returned home with a big smile on our faces. I don´t know who has been more exhausted, the guide and guardian or the little ones. One thing is certain; we have not had much fuzz at bedtime and the kids have been sleeping tight all through the night, always waiting for the next adventure around the corner.

Cheers for my excellent travel companions: los dos patiperros chicos!

Hen brain - the permanent damage of a mother of two

My brain stopped working when I became a mother. Not kidding, this myth is not a myth, its true. At least the part of the brain that makes you finish your thoughts and finish what you are doing. Its gone. It was just slightly disturbed with one child but as soon as I got home from the clinic with the second child this function stopped working. The daily implications for such dysfunction are no fun. Complete chaos in the house and usually only half of the intended day trip necessities in the bag once outside the house. In order to survive I always try to have the phrase "remember the THREE things" in my head before shutting the door: keys- check, telephone-check, wallet-check. Add to this: shoes on children´s feet- shoes on my own feet...but that is not as important as the three above as A usually rememinds me that we also need shoes and with the key its always possible to go back in, since I usually remember the shoes once hitting the snow with socks on the feet.

The biggest problem with this dysfunction is that there are always things that are lost, either momentarily or gone forever. I can never remember where I put the pacifier, the keys, the telephone etc. And since many things nowadays have their own feet (four small hands that pick them up and place them somewhere else), most of my awake time is spent searching for things or trying to recall what I was supposed to be doing. This is actually one of the reasons why I miss my work and the "hectic" pace at an office desk. At work you can finish your thoughts and you always know where the coffe cup is and where to go and get more coffee. I might have a pink view of what white collar work used to be, but hey what I remember is that every Monday morning felt like a relaxing holiday...

Back to the topic...Yesterday I realized the dearest thing of all had been misplaced. The Hotsling. First I used it to carry A. Up and down the stairs. Through airports and museums. Then I used it to carry G, up and down, out and about. The most practical sling ever, and it made my relation to both my kids so much more special than any buggy ever would do. I could carry them in my arms and still have my arms free. Both of them loved it at the age of one. I just showed them the sling and they came running and stretched their arms against me. First, I thought it was only misplaced, in the car or maybe in a lost-and-found bag in the mall. After one day of searching I had to realize the cruel reality: the sling is not there, nowhere to be found. And I am stranded. No more walking up stairs with hands free. No walking down the street with one kid in the sling and the other holding my hand. No walk up the metro stairs in hot Santiago.

Rationally you can say "come on its only a piece of fabrics, get on with your life". Luckily hubby was intelligent enough to understand the crisis yesterday and did not try such upsetting words - he let me mourn in peace. Because for me it is not that simple. Now surfing for a new sling on the internet I almost get tears in my eyes when I see the fabric of the old one. All those memories and all that mobility it gave me. Gone. I know that G will not be sitting in a sling for much longer. He is already walking up and (throwing himself) down the stairs. But still, I cannot say goodbye to the Hotsling in this abrupt way. The Zoie fabric in my size is not available anymore but I got another one. Instead of turquoise its orange, and it will be waiting for me at the post office once we get home. Until then G travels in the Beco on my back. Not as personal, but for the sake of mobility it will do.

Hotsling Zoie - R.I.P. (I hope the lucky one that found it understand how to use it...).
